An Interview with Dean Hunt, the Buzz Marketer

Joliber : Hello Dean. I’m so happy to interview one of the greatest online marketers nowadays. To start with, can you tell us some personal background about Dean Hunt?

Dean : hehe, blush. Many thanks Joliber. Sure, I am 25 years old, which in the marketing world is very young. When you hear the words “Marketing guru” you imagine a big fat guy in a suit with a huge beard…. well, I do anyway. So I suppose that is one of many things that make me stand out. Anyway… background… I spent a few years aiming to be a pro golfer, then I had a glass bottle in left kneecap incident, and that kinda put a stop to the golfing career. I got into web business approx 4 years ago, basically because all the other job options seemed depressing and annoying. I did what I call “an intensive self-learning program”, which basically meant I was on the net 16+ hours per day learning as much as I could about business, marketing, SEO etc… I am now doing numerous projects, ranging from site flipping, buzz marketing consulting, I run numerous sites, I write for numerous blogs and trade journals, and I do interviews with people who say nice things about me on their blogs ;-)

Joliber : Whenever people talk about Dean Hunt, what entails to it is “Buzz Marketing”. What is it anyway?

Dean : Buzz Marketing is the art of creating buzz (excitement) for a project, product or service. In my opinion, buzz is the after effect of exceptional creativity, and viral is the after effect of some good buzz. So for example, when the iphone came out last year, that was buzz at it’s best. I suppose the reason people link me to buzz marketing, is the fact that I have been more successful in that area than anyone else (which helps), I publically share many of my buzz studies and experiments, and I think people really appreciate that insiders view.Joliber :Recently we heard about the Web Traffic Orgasm e-book. Can you give us one big reason why we should read this book?

Dean : The one big reason is that you will be able to learn how to generate huge amounts of traffic (server destroying amounts) on a budget of zero. So if you don’t have a huge bank balance, or you don’t like the idea of Google having your destiny in the palm of it’s grubby hands, then this will be a weapon that you will be able to use for life. I have launched all of my sites, all of my businesses and all of my projects on a budget of zero. Maybe I am crazy, but it is more fun that way. There are too many people who stick up a few flashing banners, do some Pay per Click, and call themselves business men. If you want another reason?!?… it will show you in a more step by step manner the techniques I have used, some of which I have never shown before. There are so many ebooks and books on the market that give a great theory, but don’t actually tell you what to do… cough… Seth Godin… cough…. and whilst they are a great read, they leave you with little more than a theory or principle. Web Traffic Orgasm will have action points in every chapter. You gotta take action to get a reaction!Joliber : There are so many online gurus out there. New bloggers might get confused because they have different marketing syles. Now, what makes you different among others?

Dean : I think anyone who reads my personal blog at DeanHunt.com will see instantly why I am different. I go against the grain and push boundries. Normally gurus beg for work, they try and be super professional etc… well check out my sales page: http://deanhunt.com/buzz-marketing-services/I also have 6 billion feed readers: http://deanhunt.com/if-you-are-going-to-fake-it/ which I aim to increase in 2008. Seriously though, I aim to break the mould, do things differently. This industry can be a dirty, greasy machine at times, and I don’t like the way that many “experts” operate. I had two choices… copy the crowd, or set a new standard and do what I think is best. I opted for the latter, and thus far haven’t regretted it.Joliber : In one of your articles you said that John Chow has gone downhill. Why did you say so?

Dean : It was mainly due to my readers to be honest. I had one month in late 2007 where every new reader would email me and say that they liked my style, and they used to read John Chow but now it sucks! etc.. Once I had 7 or 8 people saying the same thing in the space of a week, I knew that this was a major concern for thousands of his readers. I actually got a lot of complaints from my “I Remember When John Chow was Good and Pluto Was a Planet Facebook Group”… but the complaints were because people said his blog was NEVER good ;-) http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=15796685647Joliber : If you were John Chow, what will you do now?

Dean : John certainly loves the spotlight. Rarely a week goes by when he is not at some silly conference posing for anyone who even remotely recognises him, also, part of his fame has come from showing us aspects of his life that we wouldn’t expect to see: his cars, his earnings etc…. but he has gotten carried away and presumes that the world wants to ONLY see his life. Yes, we like fast cars and we like big earnings, but we don’t care what restaurant you ate at, and we don’t want to sift through 10 paid reviews to find a piece of real content. So I would stop doing the pointless restaurant style posts, and I would remove all paid reviews (it is not like he needs the money anyway…. does he?)Joliber : If you don’t mind, can you share to us the daily working habits of Dean Hunt?

Dean : I get up around 9am, I turn my PC on, and then I go and get ready. Yes, I turn my PC on before I brush my teeth etc. Luckily my office is 5 yards from my bedroom, so that is one of the perks of working from home. I tend to sift through the emails first thing, and the rest of my day consists of anything from writing content, to helping people with their sites, to building profitable sites, to watching monkey videos on YouTube ;-) Joliber : How do you see Internet Marketing in the next 5 years?

Dean : Well, I just got a 22″ PC monitor, so that helps me see it better. But to be honest, the basic concepts of marketing are built around psychology. So the core is likely to never change. We will simply adapt the same rules to new mediums, such as video ads on Google, or new technologies. I do feel that the social aspect is going to continue to grow, and community is going to be more important than ever for a site owner. But I don’t worry about the future too much, as I said earlier, my techniques are global, and can be applied to any industry or any platform, so I don’t really have to worry where marketing is going, I will be fine either way.Joliber : What can you advise to new bloggers or other people who wan to earn online?

Dean : Buy my book ;-) hehe. I would say to try a bit of everything from an early stage. Try a bit of SEO, PPC, Link building, Design, Graphics etc… even if you are useless at a certain area, try and practice for a few days. It will really help you in future to understand all areas of your business. Also, start off with a blog, they are easy to setup, they perform well in the search engines, and they don’t require a big budget. Stick with your passions, and write from the heart… oh, and stand out from the crowd whenever possible. If you are going mainstream, then you are doing something wrong.Joliber : To sum this up, if you are given three adjectives, how would you describe Dean Hunt?

Dean : sagacious, adroit, and congenial. I don’t have a clue what they mean, but they sound good. Please someone email me if you know what they mean. Thanks.Seriously though, probably: creative, amusing, differentJoliber : Do you have any final words to add?

Dean : Wellington, jello, kinky, fun bags, boomerang…. those are my favourite sounding words.
