Powerade Team Pilipinas takes on Sri Lanka in the opener of FIBA Asia 2009 on August 6, at 9am at Tianjin, China.

Despite of their inferior finish on the recent Jones Cup, coach Yeng Guiao still believes that they will do better on the Tianjin tournament, which he describes as the real test. “These guys are ready to go, they know the urgency,” said Guiao said yesterday after conducting his final practice session.

Philippines Playing Hurt
However, Guiao and the rest of the Philippine team will missed the services of former PBA MVP Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes who are suffering from blood disorder and hamstring injury, respectively

In addition to that, reigning PBA MVP Jayjay Helterbrand will also be playing hurt along with Mick Pennisi who a mild case of bronchitis. On the other hand, James Yap will just arrive on Thursday, because he’ll attend the burial services of her mother-in-law, former President Cory Aquino.

Confident Guiao
“Through this one week, we made necessary adjustments. The patterns we made and the mentality on the physical contacts of the game. They’ve adjusted to it, and it’s satisfactory given the limited time,” he said.

“I think we’ll do well in China,” he added.

Morale Support From Filipinos
For all the Filipinos out there, let’s forget about the Jones Cup results and let’s move forward. Let us support the team Pilipinas no matter what.

“For me that was the best time to see that they are ready. The players pushed themselves to practice with me not yelling or being angry at them. Basta sa sarili nila nag-ensayo sila,” Guiao uttered.
